Where Do You Get Picked Up At Edinburgh Airport?

Edinburgh Airport has three pick up points, not one. Black cabs queue at the East Terminus rank, Uber and Bolt collect from the signposted ride share zone, and pre-booked private transfers meet passengers at the pick up and drop off zone on the ground floor of the multi storey car park opposite the terminal. That car park zone is barrier controlled and cashless. Since May 2026 it costs £8.50 for the first 10 minutes and £1 for every extra minute, with a two hour maximum and a 2.2 metre height limit. The free alternative is the long stay car park, which gives 30 minutes at no charge followed by a walk of roughly six to ten minutes back to the terminal. Blue Badge holders get one hour free in the paid zone. Edinburgh works from a single terminal, so all three options sit a few minutes from the same doors, and the only real decision is whether a driver is already waiting for you.

Where Does Your Edinburgh Airport Pick Up And Drop Off Happen In Each Hall?

Edinburgh runs a single terminal, so there is no Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 to get wrong. What catches people out instead is that the one terminal has three separate arrivals halls, and the hall you walk out of is decided by your aircraft stand rather than your airline. Here is how the pick up works in each, and where every departing passenger is dropped off.

 International Arrivals 1

International Arrivals 1 — Pickup & Drop off

A private transfer from Edinburgh Airport to Edinburgh city centre helps you travel door-to-door with pickup details confirmed before you land.

Pick-up

  • The original international hall, at the western end of the building. It is used when the airport is busy or when a long haul flight lands, and passengers are often bussed here from a stand on the other side of the airfield. Your driver watches the stand allocation, not just the flight number, so you are met at the door you actually come out of.
  • Immigration here runs on a smaller bank of ePassport gates than the newer hall, so queues build faster on a busy transatlantic morning. Waiting time is already in your fixed price, which is the difference between this being an inconvenience and being an expense.
  • You exit facing the check in hall rather than the main arrivals concourse, which is why people meeting friends here so often end up standing in the wrong place. From this hall it is a covered walk of about two minutes to our pick up point on the ground floor of the multi storey car park.

Which Edinburgh Airport Transfer Routes Do We Run Most Often?

The terminal is eight miles from Princes Street, but a large share of arrivals are not staying in Edinburgh at all. These are the four route groups we quote on most.

Edinburgh city centre, Old Town and New Town

Edinburgh city centre, Old Town and New Town

Eight miles along the A8, usually 25 to 35 minutes and longer in weekday rush hour. Central Edinburgh sits inside a Low Emission Zone covering about 1.2 square miles, running 24 hours a day, every day, enforced by number plate cameras with a £60 penalty that doubles for repeat entries. Taxis and private hire vehicles have to meet the Euro 6 standard to enter. Ours do, so we take you to the door on the Royal Mile, in Grassmarket or off George Street rather than stopping at the boundary and leaving you to walk in with your cases.

Fife, St Andrews and the golf coast

Fife, St Andrews and the golf coast

St Andrews is around 48 miles over the Queensferry Crossing, roughly an hour to 75 minutes. We also cover Gleneagles, Kingsbarns, Carnoustie, Dunfermline and Perth. Golf bags travel free and we size the vehicle around the clubs as well as the passengers, because four players with four full sets will not fit a saloon and finding that out at the rank costs you a tee time.

Glasgow, Stirling and the central belt

Glasgow, Stirling and the central belt

Glasgow city centre is about 39 miles on the M8 and takes 45 to 60 minutes on a clear run. Stirling is roughly 30 miles up the M9 at around 40 minutes. We also handle airport to airport runs between Edinburgh and Glasgow when a connection breaks or a flight gets rerouted across the country at short notice.

Why Does A Fixed Fare Beat The Edinburgh Airport Taxi Meter?

Why Does A Fixed Fare Beat The Edinburgh Airport Taxi Meter?

Edinburgh's licensed taxi tariff changed on 25 July 2026, and two details in it matter a lot if you are flying in. The first is when the higher rate applies. Tariff 2 starts at £4.80 rather than £3.60 and covers every weekday evening from 6pm plus the entire weekend, from 6am on Saturday right through to 6am on Monday, so most weekend arrivals never see the cheaper daytime rate at all.

Over Christmas and New Year the opening charge rises again, reaching £5.75 all day on 25 December and all day on 1 January. The second detail is the airport charge. The old tariff capped what a driver could pass on for using the airport pick up and drop off zone at £6. The July 2026 table removed the cap and replaced it with whatever Edinburgh Airport is charging at the time, which is currently £8.50 for the first 10 minutes. And the whole tariff only regulates journeys that finish inside the City of Edinburgh. Anything ending in Fife, Stirling, Dundee or Glasgow has to be negotiated and agreed with the driver before you set off, at the rank, with your luggage already on the pavement.

What Your Fixed Edinburgh Airport Transfer Price Includes

  • The full fare agreed before you travel, with no Tariff 2 evening or weekend uplift and no festive rate on 25 December or 1 January.
  • The airport pick-up and drop-off charge, already inside your price rather than tracking whatever the airport decides to charge next.
  • Flight tracking and waiting time, so a delayed landing or a slow baggage hall does not turn into extra cost.
  • A firm quoted price for anywhere outside the city boundary, including St Andrews, Gleneagles and Dundee, instead of a fare you have to negotiate at the rank.
  • No per passenger extras. The council tariff adds 50p for each passenger beyond three, and a £3 fee if you cancel a pre-booked black cab.
  • Card payment taken at booking, and a vehicle matched to your party and luggage so a group of six travels as one confirmed booking.

Can You Rely On Edinburgh Airport Taxis After Midnight?

August 2026 was the busiest Fringe in years. The festival ran from 7 to 31 August and issued 2,805,395 tickets, up 8% on 2025, across 4,232 shows and 61,277 performances at 306 venues. Saturday 15 August set an all time single day record with more than 164,000 tickets issued, beating the previous peak from 2019.

That is before the International Festival, the Tattoo, the Book Festival and the Murrayfield concert calendar are counted. The airport is under the same pressure year round, with passenger numbers up 7% in the first quarter of 2026 and a £150 million a year expansion programme now underway to catch up. The rank at the East Terminus does not scale with any of it. When four or five flights land inside the same half hour the queue for an Edinburgh airport taxi builds fast, and it happens again after midnight once the trams have stopped for the night.

When Pre-Booking Makes The Biggest Difference

  • Festival season in August, when road closures and pedestrianised streets change the approach to almost every Old Town hotel. The 2027 Fringe runs from 6 to 30 August, its 80th year, and demand is expected to be higher again.
  • Hogmanay and New Year, when the city centre closes to traffic for the street party and the black cab meter moves onto its festive tariff.
  • Late night and early morning arrivals, when the tram is not running and the rank empties quickly once a bank of arrivals clears.
  • Six Nations weekends and stadium concerts at Murrayfield, close enough to the airport road to affect your journey even if you are not going to the event.
  • Golf trips to St Andrews and Gleneagles, where the tee time is fixed and the drive runs over an hour with equipment on board.
  • Cruise embarkation days at South Queensferry, Newhaven, Leith or Rosyth, where missing the last tender is not a recoverable mistake.

Edinburgh Airport Transfer FAQs

Answers about Edinburgh Airport pickups and city transfers.

Book Your Airport Transfer

Whichever one your flight is sent to. Edinburgh has International Arrivals 1, International Arrivals 2 and a separate domestic hall, and the hall you walk out of is decided by your aircraft stand rather than your airline, so it can change on the day. We watch the stand allocation as well as the flight number and your driver moves to the correct door before you clear immigration.

No. The City of Edinburgh tariff only regulates journeys that finish inside the city boundary. For St Andrews, Glasgow, Stirling or Dundee the fare has to be negotiated and agreed with the driver before the journey starts, which is a conversation you are having at the rank with your luggage on the pavement. Our price for those routes is fixed at the point of booking.

Yes, around the clock. The tram does not run through the night, and while the Airlink 100 bus does, it will not collect you from a house in Fife or the Borders at 03:30 with three suitcases and a pushchair.

No. Your price is fixed whenever you book it. Edinburgh's black cab meter moved onto a festive tariff over that period, opening at £5.75 all day on 25 December and all day on 1 January, which is around 60% above the standard weekday start of £3.60.
