Why Pre-Book Your Albania Airport Transfer?

Albania offers a different arrival experience from many European destinations, particularly when it comes to arranging transport. A little planning before your flight can make the transition from the airport to your destination much smoother.

Limited Ride-Hailing Options

Limited Ride-Hailing Options

Uber and Bolt are not available in Albania, so arranging a ride after landing can be less straightforward. Pre-booking your Albania airport transfer ensures your journey is arranged before you arrive, with no need to search for a local taxi or negotiate at the airport.

Avoid Airport Touts

Avoid Airport Touts

Drivers may approach travellers inside Tirana Airport and quote inflated prices before they reach the official taxi rank. Booking in advance gives you a fixed price and avoids unwanted negotiations in the arrivals hall.

No Need for Local Currency

No Need for Local Currency

Many local taxis still rely on cash payments, usually in Albanian Lek. Paying for your Albania airport transfer in advance removes the need to exchange currency or carry cash specifically for your journey.

Why Does Traffic Get Heavier On Albanian Roads Every Summer?

Roughly as many Albanians live abroad as live in Albania itself, and most of that diaspora comes home in July and August. The result is a road network that behaves very differently in peak season than the rest of the year, and it is worth planning your Albania airport transfer around it.

The August Return

The August Return

Families based in Italy, Germany, Greece and Switzerland drive home for the summer, filling the coastal roads with rental and foreign-plated cars from late July through the end of August.

Border Crossings Under Pressure

Border Crossings Under Pressure

At Morina, the main crossing with Kosovo, over 200,000 people and more than 61,000 vehicles passed through in a single week at the end of August 2025, with queues of three to six hours reported at peak points in the season.

What It Means For Your Transfer

What It Means For Your Transfer

ATT builds this seasonal pattern into route planning and pickup timing, so a July or August booking accounts for the extra time on the road rather than assuming an empty highway.

What Should You Know About Getting Around Albania By Road?

Albania's transport network runs almost entirely on roads. A few local realities shape every transfer we plan, and they are worth knowing before you land.

No Passenger Railway
01

No Passenger Railway

Albania's national rail network no longer runs a regular passenger service, so a road transfer is the only realistic way to move between cities.

The Llogara Pass
02

The Llogara Pass

The coastal route south climbs the 1,027 metre Llogara Pass, a mountain road that adds real driving time but is the most scenic way to reach the Riviera.

Late And Early Flights
03

Late And Early Flights

Many long-haul connections into Tirana land after midnight or before dawn, exactly when the taxi rank is hardest to negotiate with, so a pre-booked driver waiting at arrivals matters most.

How Much Does An Airport Transfer Cost In Albania?

A private transfer from Tirana International Airport to Tirana city centre typically costs between €20 and €35 for a standard sedan, depending on the exact drop-off point and vehicle class. The airport's own taxi rank quotes a reference fare of about 2,200 to 3,000 Albanian Lek (roughly €20 to €25) for the 17 km, 20 to 25 minute ride into the centre, though this is not enforced and drivers often ask for more, especially at night. Longer routes scale with distance: Durrës runs from around €35, Saranda and Ksamil (over 260 km south) start from roughly €150 to €190, and cross-border transfers to Kotor or Ohrid are priced by the specific route and border crossing used. ATT fixes the exact fare for your route at the time of booking, so there is nothing left to negotiate at the terminal.

Why Does Pre-Booking Matter More At Tirana Airport Every Year?

Why Does Pre-Booking Matter More At Tirana Airport Every Year?

Tirana International Airport is not a quiet regional strip anymore. It handled 11.6 million passengers in 2025, a new record and an 8.7% jump on 2024, making it the busiest airport in the Western Balkans.

That growth is not slowing down, and it changes what an arrival at TIA actually looks like on a busy day.

Tirana's Growing Airport Traffic and Transfer Demand

  • TIA carried 11.6 million passengers in 2025, up 8.7% on the year before and roughly 249% above pre-pandemic levels.
  • August 4, 2025 was the airport's busiest single day on record, with 50,892 passengers processed through one terminal.
  • Ryanair and Wizz Air, TIA's two largest carriers, expect continued growth in 2026, with Ryanair alone forecasting more than 4 million passengers through the airport.
  • A growing share of arrivals are connecting onward overland: travellers from Kosovo, North Macedonia and Montenegro increasingly fly via Tirana rather than their nearest home airport.
  • One terminal handling that much traffic means the arrivals hall and taxi rank get busiest exactly when several wide-body and low-cost flights land together, which is when a pre-booked ATT driver saves the most time.

Do You Need A Transfer If You Arrive In Albania By Sea?

Not every arrival in Albania comes through Tirana Airport.

Two working ports handle a steady flow of international ferry passengers, and both need their own transfer plan rather than a taxi hailed at the dock.

What Travellers Need to Know

  • Durrës port receives daily overnight ferries from Bari and Ancona in Italy; the Bari crossing takes about 8 to 10 hours and typically docks in the early morning, when arrivals walk straight into a crowd of taxi drivers and money changers.
  • Saranda's port receives the Corfu hydrofoil, with up to 12 to 13 sailings a day between July and September, dropping to as little as one sailing a day in winter.
  • Vlorë's port also runs a seasonal Brindisi connection, arriving separately from the Durrës routes.
  • Ferry schedules shift by season, operator and weather, so a driver working from your confirmed booking is more reliable than trying to time a taxi to a moving arrival slot.
  • All three ports sit well outside Tirana, so a sea arrival still needs the same kind of pre-arranged Albania transfer as a flight into TIA, just from a different starting point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers about Airport, coastal journeys, and city transfers in Albania.

Book Your Airport Transfer

No. Neither Uber nor Bolt operates anywhere in Albania. Local ride-hailing apps exist in Tirana, but coverage outside the capital is inconsistent, which is why most visitors book a private transfer or use the official taxi rank.

Saranda is roughly 260 to 280 km from Tirana Airport, a 4.5 to 5.5 hour drive. Ksamil is slightly further, around 290 km, usually 5 to 5.5 hours depending on the route and traffic.

It can be. Albania's diaspora returns home in large numbers every July and August, which pushes up traffic on the coastal roads and at land border crossings. Booking your Albania airport transfer in advance means your driver plans around this rather than getting caught out by it.

A furgon is a shared minibus, the cheapest way to reach the coast from Tirana. It only leaves once full and has no fixed schedule, which makes it unreliable in peak season. A private transfer with ATT has a fixed pickup time, your own vehicle and a direct drop-off at your accommodation.

Not yet as of this writing. Vlora International Airport has completed its certification flights and is expected to open to commercial traffic, but Tirana International Airport remains Albania's only fully operating international gateway. Check current airline schedules before planning a trip around it.

Book as far ahead as possible for June through September. TIA's passenger numbers keep hitting new records, and long routes to the Riviera or across the border fill up quickly during peak season.

The Rinas Express bus runs into central Tirana for about 400 Lek but only on an hourly schedule and only to one drop-off point. A private transfer goes directly to your address, at any hour, with no walk from the bus stop.
